Overview: Washington River Protection Solutions (WRPS) is the Tank Operating Contractor (TOC) for the U.S. Department of Energy Hanford site. The Hanford Site stores mixed radioactive and chemically hazardous waste in large underground tanks. The double-shell tanks have an annulus space between its primary tank and secondary liner containment. WRPS required an inspection device to provide imagery of the annuli which can be deployed down a 4” riser.
The prototype uses photogrammetry to take a series of detailed two-dimensional images to build up a larger three-dimensional model with accurate coordinate of annulus features. The design comprises of several articulating arms made with carbon fibre poles bonded to mechanical joints, actuated by a single[NM1] cable. The system has a largest dimension of 70mm (2.75”) and the separate deployment assembly ensures a safe controlled lowering of the camera through the riser and into the annulus.
