Case Study Name: Scabbler
Client: NRS Dounreay
Timeframe: 6 Phases – over XX years
Quality Requirement: Quality Grade XXX
Overview:
The Scabbler is a hydraulically powered device for removing contaminated concrete while suppressing and capturing hazardous dust. Capable of removing up to 50 mm of material in a single pass, it operates as a dry system, transferring waste directly from the cutting head to an enclosed collection chamber.
The scabbling action is achieved by using the proven Rotocutter chain developed for concrete and hard waste removal. This has been adapted into a dedicated Scabbler head, mounted on a deployment system similar to BIDS. Key assemblies are larger and stronger than those on BIDS due to the increased reaction forces generated during scabbling operations.
The modular architecture allows for multiple deployment options to suit site requirements. The Scabbler can be driven into position, crane lifted or assembled in situ. The quick-release mechanism for the Scabbler head supports rapid changeover to replacement heads or alternative tooling.
Funding and deployment
Phase funding has been provided through the Game Changers competition established by FIS 360 (Phase 1), the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (Phases 2–4), and NRS Dounreay (Phases 5–6).
